Sport and Fitness Leadership, Bachelor’s Degree - Exercise & Wellness Specialization

The Bachelor of Sport & Fitness Leadership (BSFL) degree is currently under review with a proposal to shift to a Bachelor of Kinesiology pending Ministerial approval. 

Applications for our BSFL degree continue to be accepted, and students starting the BSFL in Fall 2021 will be supported through transition to the BKin upon its approval by the Ministry.

The Centre for Sport & Exercise Education offers innovative programing in the areas of Sport Management, Sport & Fitness Leadership, Kinesiology, Athletic & Exercise Therapy, Massage Therapy and Adventure Education. As a Sport & Fitness Leadership student, you will become an integral part of the Centre for Sport & Exercise Education (CSEE).

Degree or Diploma, your choice

Camosun offers both a four-year degree in Sport & Fitness Leadership (transitioning to Kinesiology) and a two-year Diploma in Kinesiology.

The two-year diploma program focuses study on fitness principles, physical fitness training practices, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, nutrition, health promotion, lifestyle management, stress management, growth and development and behavioural change.

The degree program provides students with the background for human performance assessment, exercise prescription, program design, high-performance training, and community recreational instruction and programming. Knowledge related to a range of populations – including high-performance athletes, children, youth, adolescent, older adults, Indigenous Peoples, individuals with diverse abilities, and individuals with chronic health conditions – all contribute to the ability of graduates to work collaboratively and across disciplines in a range of health, fitness, sport, and specialized environments.

As a Student

Activity Courses

Exercise and wellness is all about being active and learning about how to stay active. Through our applied activity courses, you gain hands on knowledge about different activities like the following:

  • Winter Sports
  • Kayaking
  • Cycling
  • Backpacking/hiking
  • Resistance training
  • Yoga

Work experience

Put your skills to work and gain valuable experience in the exercise and wellness industry. Internships are optional for diploma students. Degree students have the choice between a 100-hour work experience or 300-hour internship.

Certifications

Students must obtain valid certificates for CPR-BLS (Basic Life Support) and Standard First Aid.  This must be completed by the end of the 1st semester in the program to support your participation in activity-based courses.*

After Graduation

Certifications

Graduates of the Degree in Kinesiology meet the core competencies required to apply to challenge the Certified Personal Trainer® (CPT) and the High Performance Specialization TM exams through the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology

Graduates of the Degree in Kinesiology meet the core competencies required to apply to challenge the Clinical Exercise Physiologist® (CEP) exams through Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology

Graduates of the Degree in Kinesiology meet the requirements to apply to write the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) exam.

Graduates of the Degree in Kinesiology meet the requirements to apply for membership with the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists.

In addition, you can write the American College of Sports Medicine Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist (PAPHS) exam valid in the United States.

Further study

Diploma graduates have the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to pursue studies in the areas of sport and fitness leadership, health promotion, exercise physiology and kinesiology.

Degree graduates may pursue post-graduate education in occupational therapy and physiotherapy programs as well as variety of other post-graduate programs.

The Science of health

In our Sport & Fitness Leadership program, you'll gain knowledge and expertise in sport and fitness, and learn how to prescribe exercise programs for people at all stages of life and health.

What to expect

The Sport & Fitness Leadership program is located at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence on the Interurban campus. The diploma program consists of Year 1 and Year 2, while the Bachelor's degree program adds a third and fourth year of study. 

In year one you will cover the basics of human anatomy, academic writing strategies, leadership & communication, physiology, fitness & wellness, biomechanics and computer applications in sport. You'll also gain competency in a variety of activities and sports. In year two you will focus on fitness and health assessment, adapted sport, nutrition, facility operations and the design of exercise prescriptions. You will also have the option of doing an internship. By the end of this year, you may graduate with your Diploma and/or continue your studies. You'll be eligible to write the CSEP Certified Personal Trainer exam.

In year three, you'll look more closely at the workings of the human body and how to adapt fitness programs to accommodate injury and disease. You'll also learn about business and logistical aspects of your upcoming career. In year four you will put your skills into practice through a work experience or internship. You'll continue your studies of human biology, pathology and sport, and come out ready to write the CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist exam and graduate with your Degree.
